What a NEPSE sale actually nets you.
Broker commission, SEBON fee, DP charge, and capital gains tax on a share sale — the full stack between the price on your screen and the number that lands in your account.
Buying Rs 1.0 lakh and selling for Rs 1.3 lakh after 400 days leaves a taxable gain of Rs 29,156. At the listed long-term rate of 7.5%, capital gains tax comes to Rs 2,187 — leaving Rs 1.3 lakh after every commission, fee, and tax.

Individual (natural person) rates only — institutions, non-residents, and government-acquisition rates differ. Models a single buy-then-sell lot, not the multi-lot weighted-average cost CDSC tracks across several purchases. Gains above Rs 40 lakh in a fiscal year require filing (form D-4) rather than the usual final withholding — see the linked guide.
How the math works
Each leg of the trade carries broker commission (tiered by size), a 0.015% SEBON fee, and a flat Rs 25 DP charge. The buy-side total sets your real cost basis; the sell-side total is subtracted from proceeds before tax. Capital gains tax then applies to the gain over that cost basis, at 7.5% if held more than 365 days or 10% if held 365 days or fewer for FY 2083/84 — CDSC withholds it automatically at settlement.
What this calculator leaves out
It models a single buy-then-sell lot rather than the weighted-average cost across several purchases of the same scrip, doesn't split out institution or non-resident rates, and doesn't track the Rs 40 lakh annual filing threshold across multiple trades — see the linked guides for those.
Frequently asked
- What is the capital gains tax rate on NEPSE shares right now?
- For FY 2083/84 (from Shrawan 2083, mid-July 2026), a resident individual pays 7.5% on the gain if shares were held more than 365 days, and 10% if held 365 days or fewer. The prior year, FY 2082/83, these were 5% and 7.5%. Institutions pay a flat 10%, unlisted shares are taxed at 10% for individuals, and non-residents pay 25%.
- Is the tax calculated on the sale price or only the profit?
- Only the gain — sale proceeds minus your cost basis, not the full sale value. This calculator also nets out broker commission, the SEBON fee, and the DP charge on both the buy and sell side before computing the gain, matching how the real cost basis and net proceeds work out.
- What does a NEPSE trade cost besides the tax?
- Broker commission on a tiered slab from 0.36% (small trades) down to 0.243% (above Rs 1 crore), a SEBON regulatory fee of 0.015%, and a flat Rs 25 DP (depository) charge per company per settlement — all on both the buy and sell leg. On a Rs 1 lakh trade that's roughly Rs 370 just to buy.
- Who actually deducts the capital gains tax?
- For listed shares, CDS and Clearing Ltd (CDSC) computes the gain and withholds the tax at settlement, before the money reaches your bank account — you never file or pay it by hand. For most individual investors it's a final tax with no annual reconciliation, unless total share gains in a fiscal year exceed Rs 40 lakh, which triggers a filing requirement.
- Does this calculator handle multiple purchases of the same share?
- No — it models one buy-then-sell lot. In practice, if you bought the same company's shares across several transactions, CDSC blends them into a single weighted-average cost (WACC), and bonus shares enter at zero cost while right shares enter at what you paid. See the linked guide for the full WACC mechanics.
