1 tola = 11.6638 g = 100 lal. Enter the day's rate from FENEGOSIDA or your jeweller; there is no live price here. Wastage and the making charge are applied as a percentage of the gold value; a shop that quotes making as a flat amount per tola needs converting first. Taxes and fees collected on top of the bill are not included.

Where the rate comes from

The Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers' Association publishes the day's fine gold and silver rates, per tola and per 10 grams, on fenegosida.org. This calculator has no live feed. The default rate is FENEGOSIDA's fine-gold price for 19 October 2026, Rs 2,90,200 a tola (Rs 2,48,800 per 10 g); replace it with the day's figure or the rate your jeweller quotes. If you have the per-10-gram figure instead, switch the rate basis and enter that; switching converts the number in the box rather than reinterpreting it.

Tola, lal and gram

A tola is standardised at 180 grains, or 11.6638038 grams, and FENEGOSIDA's own pair of rates implies the same: Rs 2,90,200 ÷ Rs 2,48,800 × 10 g comes to 11.664 g. A lal is one hundredth of a tola, about 0.1166 g, the unit small ornaments are often weighed in. International spot prices are quoted per troy ounce of 31.1034768 g, which is exactly 2⅔ tola, so a dollar-per-ounce price has to be divided by 2.667 before it can be set against a Nepali per-tola rate, and converted to rupees on top. The tables under the results restate your weight in all four units.

Making charge and wastage

A jewellery bill has three parts: the gold value, the wastage (jarti) and the making charge (jyala). The calculator applies both extras as a percentage of the gold value, which is how the record-high gold guide and the gold sale tax guide state them; those guides also put numbers on how large they typically run. If a shop quotes making as a flat amount per tola, divide it by the rate: Rs 25,000 a tola on a Rs 2,90,200 rate is about 8.6%. A coin or bar usually carries little or no making charge, so set both to zero to price one.

The split bar and the sentence under the results show what share of the bill is not gold. That share matters more than the rate. When you sell a piece back, the jeweller values it on weight and purity at the day's buying rate, and the making charge does not come back, so the gold price has to rise by the making-and-wastage percentage, plus the buy-sell gap, before an ornament breaks even. At the default rate, a 2-tola necklace with a 10% making charge costs Rs 6,38,440: Rs 5,80,400 of gold and Rs 58,040 of making. Sell it back at an unchanged rate and the most you can expect is the gold value, less the jeweller's margin.

24K, 22K and the tejabi quote

Karat counts parts of gold in 24, so 22-karat gold is 22/24, or 91.67%, gold. The 22K option values the gold content at 22/24 of the fine rate: Rs 2,66,017 a tola at the default rate. That is what the metal in a 22K piece is worth against fine gold. It is not necessarily what a shop charges for tejabi, which the gold investment guide notes has been priced at a fixed discount narrower than purity implies. If the shop gives you its own 22K rate, enter that and keep "rate as quoted".

What the bill here leaves out

  • The skill promotion fee. From Shrawan 1, 2083, sellers of gold, silver and ornaments collect a 0.5% skill promotion fee from the final consumer. It is not added here.
  • Stones and other material. Price the net gold weight. Stones, lacquer and settings are not gold and are not worth the gold rate on resale.
  • The buy-sell gap. A jeweller buys back below the rate it sells at, so a same-day round trip returns less than the gold value shown here.
  • Tax on selling. There is none on a personal sale: the Income Tax Act's list of taxable non-business assets is land, buildings and interests in entities, and gold is not on it.

Frequently asked

How many grams is one tola of gold in Nepal?
11.6638 grams. The tola is standardised at 180 grains, which is 11.6638038 g, and FENEGOSIDA's own published rates agree: its per-tola and per-10-gram prices for the same day imply 11.664 g. Ten grams is therefore about 0.857 tola.
How many lal are in one tola?
One hundred. A lal is 1/100 of a tola, about 0.1166 grams, which is why small pieces such as rings and earrings are often weighed and priced in lal. Choose lal as the weight unit above and the calculator converts it to tola and grams.
Where do I find today's gold price in Nepal?
The Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers' Association (FENEGOSIDA) publishes the day's fine gold and silver rates, per tola and per 10 grams, on fenegosida.org. This calculator has no live feed, so enter that day's rate, or the rate your jeweller quotes, in the rate box.
How is the price of gold jewellery calculated?
Gold value plus wastage plus the making charge. The gold value is the weight in tola times the day's rate. Wastage (jarti) and the making charge (jyala) are usually stated as a percentage of that value, and together they are the part of the bill that a jeweller typically does not pay back when you sell the piece later.
How do I calculate the price of 22-carat (tejabi) gold?
Karat counts parts of gold in 24, so 22-carat gold is 22/24, or 91.67%, gold. Choose the 22K option to value the gold content at 22/24 of the fine rate. If your jeweller quotes its own 22K rate, enter that rate instead and keep 'rate as quoted', since a shop's tejabi rate need not be exactly 22/24 of fine.
Do I pay tax when I sell my gold in Nepal?
Not as a capital gain. The Income Tax Act's list of taxable non-business assets covers land, buildings and interests in entities; personal gold is not on it. The costs you do meet sit on the buying side, such as the making charge, and in the gap between a jeweller's selling and buying rates.
